It’s that time of year! Cold weather is setting in, and school breaks and the holidays are on the way. But that also means it’s a lot harder to do all your favorite outdoor activities. And if you’re anything like me, you end up feeling bored a lot more often. Can you relate?
If you’re looking for fun new ways to pass the time, there are so many options other than just scrolling your phone! (You can find a lot of them in my post, 15 Ideas For Screen-Free Fun.) But one of my favorite other ways to stay busy is by diving into a great middle-grade book series!
Book series are great because they give you time to get lost in a story. You can put yourself in the place of some amazing characters and explore a brand new fantasy world. Doesn’t that sound awesome?
Even if you haven’t loved reading in the past, I would recommend giving one of these series a try. You might be surprised how much you love it!

1. Story Thieves by James Riley
Story Thieves is a 5-book series with a mix of characters from a fantasy world and the real world! In this series, you’ll meet Bethany and Owen, who can climb in and out of books (which I think would be so cool). Each book is jam-packed with adventure and unexpected twists and turns at every corner. This series is a great place to start if you’re want to dive back into books!
2. The Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black
This middle-grade book series begins with a mysterious letter found in an attic by a group of siblings. Throughout the next 5 books, this letter leads them to the world of faerie, which includes elves, goblins, trolls, and other creatures of fantasy you wouldn’t even imagine! Go on a thrilling adventure by picking up The Spiderwick Chronicles. (It will be hard to put these ones down!)
3. Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black
After you’ve read The Spiderwick Chronicles, make this your next stop! After the first series, a new set of siblings stumbles on the faerie world for themselves. Before long the Vargas kids are battling monsters, goblins and more. Some old familiar faces also pop up in this three-book series, which I loved. If you enjoyed the Spiderwick Chronicles be sure to dive into these books also!
4. Fairy Tale Reform School by Jen Calonita
This 5-book series all starts with Gilly, who lives in a boot. After getting into trouble, she forms a group of unlikely friends who all must join forces to save their school and kingdom from the ultimate bad-guys. The villains in these books are from many classic fairy tales and stories, which makes these books a really fun read.
5. Lockwood & Co by Johnathan Stroud
Ghosts taking over London – need I say more? These ghosts are taking over the city, and they’re not exactly friendly. But only young people can see and get rid of the ghosts! Different agencies start popping up to handle the epidemic, which eventually leads to a small group investigating one of the most haunted houses in all of England. These books have action, suspense, and humor, and make for such a fun read.
